a happy older couple

Throughout your cataract surgery experience at North Shore Eye Care, you can expect compassionate care in absolute comfort using the very latest in technology. We want to make sure that you feel completely at ease about improving your quality of life through cataract surgery from the moment you reach out to us until you have fully healed. Before cataract surgery, you will undergo a comprehensive exam by one of our doctors. During surgery, we use the advanced ORA System®, to thoroughly measure your eyes and determine which type of intraocular lens (IOL) will best meet your needs.

Video: Cataract Surgery Procedure

Over the past few decades, there have been many breakthroughs in cataract surgery. What used to be a 3-5 night hospital stay is now performed as an outpatient procedure in just a couple of hours. The procedure is virtually pain free and visual recovery happens almost overnight.

Laser Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery at North Shore Eye Care is a virtually painless procedure that can be completed in just 10 minutes, though the entire office visit will take longer. You should plan to have someone drive you to and from your appointment. Our friendly staff will greet you when you arrive at our office.

When surgery begins, you will be given an anesthetic to ensure your comfort. You will lie on your back and look at a bright light on the ceiling. The procedure begins with the CATALYS® Precision Laser creating incisions in the cornea, the transparent, dome-shaped structure located at the front of the eye. The incisions are made according to the data collected through three-dimensional mapping of the eye using laser energy delivered in quadrillionth-of-a-second pulses. This technology allows our eye surgeons to make incisions with extraordinary precision, leaving surrounding tissues undisturbed. Next, the CATALYS® will fragment the clouded lens into small pieces. Ultrasound is used to fragment the lens into even smaller pieces, which will then be carefully suctioned out through the corneal incisions. Once the lens is completely removed, the IOL will be placed.

I am so pleased with my vision after surgery. The team was friendly and made me feel very comfortable throughout the process.

Recovering from Cataract Surgery

Patients usually begin noticing an improvement in their vision immediately after surgery, and can return home shortly after the procedure. No sutures or eye patches are necessary during recovery, but we do provide post-operative eye drops that should be used as directed to avoid infection or inflammation. We will schedule a follow-up appointment to make sure your eyes are healing properly. You should plan to rest and avoid strenuous physical activity for a couple of days, but you can return to normal activity after that time. During your recovery, some irritation, light sensitivity, and fluid discharge are normal. It can take up to eight weeks to fully heal.

Lasting Benefits of Cataract Surgery

The primary benefit of cataract surgery is improved vision. Some patients will need to continue to wear reading glasses after cataract removal surgery, but the overall vision enhancement achieved through the procedure can improve their quality of life significantly. Patients can once again participate in hobbies, sports, and work that were not possible when cataracts compromised their sight. If the patient wishes to further enhance vision with laser vision correction, our advanced technology makes it possible for qualifying cataract patients to undergo LASIK and PRK.
