Cataract surgery is one of the safest surgeries in the world. More than 3 million cataract surgeries are performed every year in the United States. More than 60% of Americans over 65 have developed cataracts in one or both eyes. Cataracts are like wrinkles, everyone who lives long enough will develop them. Over 90% of cataracts are caused by the aging process. Most people, usually beginning in their fifties, start to experience blurred vision even if they have had great vision their whole lives. Glasses that usually work well become unsatisfactory. Cataracts are the one of the leading causes of treatable blindness, creating vision cloudiness. They can also be caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, smoking, trauma to the eye or as the secondary effects of diseases such as diabetes. In all areas of cataract surgery, specifically using intraocular lenses (IOLs) to replace the eye's natural lens is an important decision. At North Shore Eye Care offer many different lens options including Crystalens, Restor, Technis and Toric IOL.

Here at North Shore Eye Care we pride ourselves in providing the best ophthalmology care for all our patients. Dr Sidney Martin began this tradition over 40 years ago and it still continues today. Today, North Shore Eye Care is a modern eye care practice that specializes in advanced cataract surgery and laser vision correction. Technology has revolutionized cataract surgery making it a safer, more successful surgery. Dr. Lawrence Zweibel, Dr. Jeffrey Martin and Dr. John Mauro all use state of the art cataract surgery and laser vision correction procedures. In cataract surgery, the cloudy lens of the eye or cataract is removed using phacoemulsification or computer controlled high speed ultrasound through a small incision that seals without stitches. No eye patch is necessary in most cases and needles around the eye are also not necessary. Our patients return home the very same day and experience no pain in most cases. Our board certified eye doctors and eye surgeons, Dr. Zweibel, Dr. Martin, and Dr. Mauro all specialize in intraocular implant technology including accommodating lenses like the Crystalens and the Crystalens HD. We also use multifocal implants like the Restor and the Tecnis multifocal lens. The Acrysof Toric implant reduces or eliminates astigmatism in most cases and our patients with these premium implants are able to see well without the need of glasses or contact lenses.
