DR. ZWEIBEL: There are two aspects to considering whose going to be a good candidate for LASIK. Firstly, there should be a need to want to see better without your glasses or your contact lenses. For some people this may be cosmetic, but for other people there may be a strong need, such as with athletes or policemen and firemen.
The second consideration is the overall health of the patient and their eyes. The eyes should be free of disease, scarring and any other form of disease. But medical considerations are also a factor. There are certain disease states, such as rheumatoid arthritis that can also affect the results of the operation.
