The nationally renowned eye doctors at North Shore Eye Care provide state-of-the-art treatments for many different eye diseases and conditions. The TECNIS™ Multifocal IOL, or intraocular lens, is offered at our practice in Smithtown, Long Island to restore vision in individuals with cataracts.
Multifocal lenses are just one type of implantable lens that can be placed during cataract removal surgery. Able to correct vision at all distances, the TECNIS™ Multifocal lens enables cataract patients to see objects that are up close as well as those that are far away, without the need for contacts or eyeglasses.
By replacing the natural lens that is clouded over with cataracts, the TECNIS™ Multifocal lens also removes all cataract symptoms such as blurry vision, halos, and faded colors. In addition, the TECNIS™ Multifocal lens was designed using Wavefront™ technology similar to that which is used in CustomVue™ Individualized Laser Vision Correction. This advanced technology created an extremely accurate multifocal intraocular lens that was designed to address vision problems caused by a misshapen cornea.
Other benefits of the TECNIS™ Multifocal lens include its abilities to minimize glare and improve low-light and nighttime vision. Improved vision is often noticed the day after the procedure but can sometimes be noticed immediately after treatment. For more information about the TECNIS™ IOL or the benefits of the multifocal lens, please contact our practice to schedule a consultation.
The TECNIS™ Multifocal lens is inserted through a tiny incision in the eye during a two-part procedure. First, the crystalline lens is broken up using ultrasonic waves. The crystalline lens is the part of the eye behind the cornea that can thicken over time and become cloudy, forming cataracts that obstruct vision. During the procedure, the unhealthy crystalline lens is broken up into minute fragments and the tiny pieces are then vacuumed away.
Next, the crystalline lens is replaced with the TECNIS™ Multifocal IOL. The intraocular lens is inserted through the same tiny incision in the eye using a specialized insertion tool. The TECNIS™ Multifocal lens is rolled up as it is inserted, but once in the eye the lens unfolds into its proper position. The TECNIS™ Multifocal lens can replace the natural lens of the eye and correct both nearsightedness and farsightedness, all in one convenient, painless procedure with a minimal recovery period.
