The ReSTOR® intraocular lens (IOL) can give patients of our Smithtown, Long Island practice who require lens replacement surgery truly multifocal vision with little or no dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
Until recently, patients with conditions requiring replacement of their natural lenses, such as cataracts, had to settle for lenses that focus only at a single distance, known as monofocal lenses. While the natural eye can be focused by muscular contraction, replacement lenses cannot be attached to the muscles, and, therefore, cannot be contracted. Because of this, traditional monofocal lenses are usually prescribed for distance vision, and the patient needs glasses or contact lenses for near vision.
The AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL, now available at our Smithtown, Long Island practice, is a multifocal lens, one that gives the patient vision over a wide range of distance, dramatically reducing or even eliminating the need to use glasses or contact lenses.
The surface of the ReSTOR® lens is not smooth, but consists of a circular pattern of concentric steps. Each step focuses light waves from a different range of distance, bringing them all together on the retina to form an image that is completely in focus. This multifocal lens concept originated in the 19th Century, to create a more efficient lens for lighthouses, and is now used for stage lights, astronomical telescopes, and microscopes. Now, in the 21st Century, ReSTOR® multifocal IOLs give lens replacement patients vision nearly as good as they would have with healthy natural lenses.
