Meet the Doctors


The LASIK and cataract surgeons of North Shore Eye Care in Smithtown - located on Long Island - are dedicated to providing the highest quality care to every patient they treat. Each of our surgeons is board certified and experienced in all aspects of eye care, including LASIK surgery and cataract surgery.

Sidney A. Martin, M.D.

Dr. Sidney A. Martin received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University and his medical degree from the State University of New York at Brooklyn. He completed an internship at Beth Israel Hospital in New York before serving as a medical officer in the United States Navy.

Dr. Martin has practiced ophthalmology in Smithtown for 40 years. He served as chief resident in ophthalmology at the Baltimore Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, and he is currently a clinical instructor at State University of New York at Stony Brook and an attending ophthalmologist at St. Catherine of Sienna Hospital.

Dr. Martin has been featured in "Top Doctors: New York Metro Area," which is published annually by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. Doctors that are listed in this book have been determined to be in the top 10 percent of physicians in the region, which includes more than 6,000 doctors.

Dr. Martin is a member of numerous associations, including the Suffolk County Medical Society, the Medical Society of the State of New York, and the New York State Ophthalmologic Society. In addition, he is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Lawrence Zweibel, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Lawrence Zweibel earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University before going on to receive his medical degree from Albany Medical College. He completed his internship at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York and served as chief resident in ophthalmology at the French and Polyclinic Medical Center.

Dr. Zweibel has been a partner of North Shore Eye Care for the past 25 years. He is a clinical instructor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and serves as Chief of Ophthalmology at St. Catherine of Sienna Hospital in Smithtown. He has been named in "Top Doctors: New York Metro Area" for the past ten years as published by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd.

Dr. Zweibel is a member of the Medical Society of the State of New York, the Suffolk County Medical Society, and the New York State Ophthalmologic Society. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Jeffrey L. Martin, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Jeffrey Martin has been a partner at North Shore Eye Care since 1997. He earned a biology degree summa cum laude from Muhlenberg College and was elected Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to receive his medical degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook School of Medicine. Dr. Martin completed his internship at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York and served as chief resident in ophthalmology at Nassau County Medical Center.

Dr. Martin is an assistant clinical professor of ophthalmology at the State University of New York Stony Brook and is an attending ophthalmologist at St. Catherine of Sienna Hospital. In addition, he devotes time to teaching resident ophthalmologists at the Northport Veterans Administration Medical Center.  For the last several years, Dr. Martin has been selected for inclusion in "Top Doctors: New York Metro Area" by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd.

Dr. Martin is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons and is a member of the Medical Society of the State Of New York, the Suffolk County Medical Society, and the New York State Ophthalmologic Society.

Dr. Martin is a consultant for several eye care and eye surgical companies including Allergan, Bausch and Lomb, Ista, and Inspire Pharmaceuticals.

John Mauro D.O.

john-mauro.jpgDr. John Mauro is the newest member of our team here at North Shore Eye Care. Previously a pharmacist, Dr. Mauro earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from St. John's University, Queens, NY. He then completed his medical school training at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Philadelphia, PA and his internship at Mercy Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA. He then completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Nassau University Medical Center/Stony Brook University, where he served as chief resident in ophthalmology.

Afterwards, he completed his fellowship training at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Eye Research Surgery Institution in Cambridge, Massachusetts. During his fellowships, Dr. Mauro specialized in the treatment of uveitis and ocular inflammatory diseases as well as cataract surgery; implantation of multi-focal, accommodating and astigmatism correcting intraocular lenses. He spent additional training at the Boston Eye Group, Massachusetts, where he learned the latest techniques in custom bladeless laser refractive surgery. Dr. Mauro has been active in ophthalmic research, co-authoring numerous book chapters, article publications and presentations; including the involvement in multiple prospective and experimental research trials.

Dr. Mauro is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is an attending ophthalmologist at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, and Northport Veterans Administration Medical Center, where he devotes time to teaching ophthalmologists in training. He is also an attending ophthalmologist at St. Catherine of Sienna Hospital. Dr. Mauro is a member of numerous professional societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery
