What is LASIK?

LASIK, or Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, is an FDA-approved surgical procedure that corrects myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism by permanently changing the shape of the cornea (the eye's thin, clear covering).

During the LASIK procedure here at our Long Island office, a small incision is made to create a flap in the top layer of the cornea. The flap is then folded back to expose the cornea’s internal layer, called the stroma. Next, a computer-controlled excimer laser removes a thin layer of the stroma, and, in less than a minute, the excimer laser accurately reshapes the internal cornea (stroma). Lastly, the flap is placed back into its original position. The LASIK procedure usually takes about five to seven minutes per eye.

Because the cornea bonds quickly, no stitches are required and healing time is fast. In fact, most patients return to their normal daily activities the day after their LASIK surgery! And, the results of LASIK are permanent, so you can view life with clearer vision for years to come.

What are the Benefits of LASIK?

Millions of Americans are enjoying the results of LASIK, and millions more are considering the procedure that could free them from the hassle and worry of glasses and contacts. LASIK is widely recognized as one of the most effective laser vision correction procedures available. The majority of patients who undergo LASIK report significantly improved vision. In fact, in a recent clinical study of CustomVue&tradeLASIK procedures, 100 percent of patients could pass a driving test without glasses or contacts, and 98 percent of patients could see 20/20 or better without glasses or contacts. LASIK can also dramatically improve night vision.
