Cataract Treatment with the AcrySof® Toric IOL Lens

With the advent of new intraocular lenses (IOLs) such as the ReZoom™, ReSTOR®, and Crystalens®, individuals can now receive simultaneous treatment for cataracts and eye conditions such as nearsightedness. North Shore Eye Care, located in Smithtown, Long Island, is proud to offer the AcrySof® Toric IOL lens to restore vision in cataract patients with astigmatism.

AcrySof® Toric Lens Candidates

Cataract removal surgery and intraocular lenses (IOLs) have been effective treatment options for individuals with cataracts for many years. However, even though IOLs could replace lenses and remove halos and other cataract symptoms, they were not able to treat conditions such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Patients with these conditions often still needed to wear glasses or contacts or undergo laser vision correction in order to see clearly after treatment.

Now, the AcrySof® Toric IOL lens provides comprehensive vision correction to individuals with astigmatism who are undergoing cataract surgery so that they do not require corrective lenses after treatment. The AcrySof® Toric lens is designed specifically to correct vision in cataract patients with astigmatism, a common eye condition in which the cornea or the lens inside the eye is misshapen and causes blurred vision.

If your vision is affected by cataracts as well as astigmatism, the AcrySof® Toric IOL lens can provide an effective treatment solution for both conditions at the same time. To learn more about how the AcrySof™ Toric lens can help you see clearly after cataract removal surgery without the need for glasses or contact lenses, contact North Shore Eye Care today to schedule a personal consultation.

AcrySof® Toric Lens Placement

The AcrySof® Toric lens is inserted into the eye during an outpatient procedure that is very similar to the placement of other IOLs. First, the eyes are numbed with medicated eye drops, and the patient is given a mild sedative so that he or she will feel no discomfort during treatment.

Next, a tiny incision is made in the eye, at the side of the cornea. A small probe is inserted through the incision and focused on the crystalline lens, the area behind the cornea where cataracts develop. The probe then emits sound waves causing the degenerated, cloudy crystalline lens to break into tiny pieces, which are then vacuumed away using a specialized instrument. The AcrySof® Toric lens is then inserted through the same incision in the cornea to replace the crystalline lens and complete the procedure.

The AcrySof® Toric IOL lens is specially designed to correct astigmatism by changing how light is reflected as it passes through the eye. Using this treatment, patients with astigmatism not only experience relief from cataracts, but are also able to see clearly after treatment without the need for additional vision correction.
