Sound Beach is a Hamlet located in Suffolk Countys Town of Brookhaven. The hamlet of Sound Beach came into existence in the late 1920s. The property lots in the area were being sold in the New York Daily Mirror in New York City. Middle income residents of New York City who subscribed to the Mirror could buy parcels for less than $15.00. The early residents erected large tents on their property during the summer months. Eventually small cottages or bungalows, as they were called dotted the area.
Sound Beach was a summer community for about 40 years after its development. Most residents left to go back to their winter residences after Labor Day. Today the hamlet is a year round community where many of the small plots have been developed to sustain modern homes. The beaches are not as pristine or crowded as they were in the past but the beauty of this little town still remains. Few of the original cottages still exist.
NSEC serves the residents of Sound Beach with a variety of concerns including narrow or closed angle glaucoma. With narrow angle glaucoma, the drainage canal (angle) of the eye is actually very narrow and therefore reduces fluid outflow. The treatment for a narrow angle is laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI). With LPI, a microscopic opening is made in the periphery of the iris. This creates an area of outflow in the event that the drainage canal closes.
LPI is a safe and easy way to prevent an angle closure attack. The eye doctors at North Shore Eye Care in Smithtown New York perform laser peripheral iridotomy right in the office. It takes a few minutes and patients are able to return home right afterward.
North Shore Care is committed to providing continuing education opportunities for Optometrists. For more information, please see our previous symposia or a list of upcoming events.
