Smithtown is a town in Suffolk County, on the North Shore of Long Island, New York.   Smithtown is bordered on the north by the Long Island Sound, the west by Huntington, the south by Islip and the east by Brookhaven, and lies in the western part of Suffolk County, approximately 50 miles east of New York City.   The town was first settled in 1650. The local legend has it that Native Americans told Smith (an early settler) that he would be granted title to all the land he could ride across in one day on a bull. The land he acquired in this way is said to estimate the current town's location. There is a large statue of Smith's bull known as Whisper, at the fork of Jericho Turnpike and St. Johnland Road. The town was originally named as Smithfield.

The Nissequogue River is in the area with attractions such as the 543-acre Caleb Smith State Park and historic sites like the Franklin O. Arthur Farm. The hamlet has attracted young buyers and a great place to raise a family because of its child-friendly environment and many quality homes which are made at affordable prices. The growing demand for new homes in Smithtown has lead to many new developments being built. The Smithtown Central School District has a total of nine elementary schools, three middle schools, and two high schools on two different campuses. The Smithtown Christian School is the only private school in the area (pre-school to twelfth grade). The Town of Smithtown is also home to the Kings Park Central School District, a portion of the Commack Union-Free School District (shared with the Town of Huntington), and a portion of the Sachem Central School District (shared with the Town of Brookhaven).

North Shore Eye Care serves the residents of Smithtown with a variety of concerns including cataract surgery.  North Shore eye care is a leader in cataract surgery and cataract treatment.  There are signs and symptoms of cataract that all patients should know about.  The board certified cataract experts at North Shore eye care, Dr. Jeffrey Martin, Dr. Larry Zweibel, and Dr. John Mauro are excellent at helping our patients with cataract. In cataract surgery, North Shore eye care doctors use the most up-to-date techniques including small incision cataract surgery using small incisions that do not need stitches.  We do not use needles around the eyes or even an eye patch following surgery.  Our patients return home the very same day and have little to no discomfort.  We are expert at premium implant lenses such as Crystalens, Restor, and Tecnis multifocal.  These implants are designed to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses.

The main symptoms of cataract that we often see are glare with oncoming headlights while driving at night, glare with sunlight, and blurred or hazy vision.  These symptoms can come on slowly and often are not realized until they become more significant.  A cataract is simply a natural aging process of the lens.  As the natural crystalline lens becomes denser and harder, the lens material starts to opacify of cloud over.  As this happens, patients start to notice symptoms.  Also, there can be a significant shift in eyeglass prescription due to the change in the lens.  When these symptoms become problematic enough to interfere with quality of life, we consider cataract surgery.  Our board certified eye doctors almost never tell our patients that they need cataract surgery.  Most commonly, our patients tell us when the symptoms are bad enough that they want cataract surgery.
