North Shore Eye Care serves the residents of Montauk with a variety of concerns including laser vision correction.  When people opt to have laser vision correction they are often confused which procedure is best for them.  This is in large part because when they go for laser consultations different doctors sometimes steer them towards the operation they are most comfortable performing.  The reality is all three of the popular modalities;  lasik, lasek, and PRK all tend to give the same end result.  Lasik is clearly the most popular of these procedures and for good reason as it gives the quickest visual rehabilitation with the least amount of discomfort.  It's normal for patients to go about there daily activities the day following this procedure with 20/20 vision.  Additionally with the advent of the femptosecond laser, laser flaps which are created during lasik make this procedure extremely safe while at the same time giving enhanced vision.  That having been said there are still times when lasek and PRK may be preferred.

Examples of this are some branches of the military or other situations when combat may be anticipated.  Since the latter two procedures don't involve the creation of a flap they are thought to be safer under these conditions.  As far as deciding which surface laser procedure to have; lasek vs. PRK, studies involving over 1000 eyes have shown no significant difference between the 2 groups was noted when considering vision, healing time, corneal haze, and pain.
