Medford is a hamlet located in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. It is in the southwest part of the Town of Brookhaven.  The Native Indians acknowledged that Medford did not have the soil of the rest of Long Island and that it was best left as a wilderness.  Europeans settlers were almost certainly not as successful initially in assuring land at Medford in the same way that they had been in other parts of the Island but they did try to make the best of the countryside that had become their own.  The Long Island Rail Road arrived around 1850 and gave a deserved increase to Medford's fortunes.  The central location of the town became even more obvious and more and more people moved in and used the large tracts of land to establish themselves in comfortable and stable manner. The Rail Road overstepped its brief and established an Agricultural Research Station at Medford, to try and find ways of making the land agriculturally productive.

The community is served by Patchogue-Medford School District except for extreme southeastern Medford, which is served by the South Country Central School District and extreme northeastern Medford, which is served by the Longwood Central School District. The Patchogue-Medford School District has six elementary schools, three middle schools, and one high school which meet the state's educational high standards in character education programs, including balanced arts and science programs. The Blue Ridge Gold Club is one of the world-class golf courses in the state that has a Private affair with 9 holes and also a par of 30 courses. Medford has some beautiful homes in rustic settings with ranch facilities for horses. Although the building boom in Medford has subsided, a few new homes continue to grow such as Victorians and Colonials, as well as ranch styles, capes, and split-levels.

North Shore Eye Care serves the residents of Medford with a variety of concerns including Dry Eye Syndrome.  There are many reasons for dry eye. Dry eye is prevalent in the aging population. Women that are post-menopausal can have significant hormonal dry eye. Many medications such as blood pressure medication, antihistamines, and anti-depressants cause dry eye as well. Poor eyelid position and environmental conditions also cause significant dry eye. In a large eye care practice like North Shore Eye Care in Smithtown New York in Long Island, our board certified eye doctors and eye surgeons treat dry eye every day. There are many symptoms associated with dry eye. The symptoms that many patients know are foreign body sensation, pain, light sensitivity, redness, and itching. Dry eye often causes excessive tearing. When the ocular surface is dry, the lacrimal gland that is responsible for creating tears can react by reflex and cause excessive tearing. These tears tend to be too watery and simply spill over the eyelid margin. Another symptom of dry eye is visual fluctuation with concentration like reading, driving a car, or watching a movie. When you concentrate, the blink rate reduces and the ocular surface becomes drier. When the tear film is inadequate, the vision will blur

Our board certified eye doctors in Suffolk County of Long Island start with conservative treatment. We tell our patients to avoid environmental irritants such as scented soaps, air fresheners, certain cosmetics, and other allergenic compounds. We have our patients use artificial tears and ointments at night. We have our patients use oral nutrition such as flaxseed oil and fish oil. Restasis is a prescription dry eye product that is a wonderful addition to our treatment of dry eye. Restasis is topical cyclosporine that treats dry eye and inflammation associated with dry eye. Restasis can take a few weeks to start working, but after that time, most patients have fewer symptoms and clearer consistent vision.
