Huntington is a hamlet located within the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County, Long Island. In 1653, three settlers named Richard Holbrook, Robert Williams, and Daniel Whitehead, all of Oyster Bay purchased a parcel of land that is now known as "the First Purchase" from the Matinecock tribe of Native Indians. Then, they immediately turned the land over to a group of white men who had already settled within its boundaries. The first purchase was bordered on the west by Cold Spring Harbor, on the east by Northport Harbor, on the south by what is now known as Old County Road and on the north by Long Island Sound. Some people say the community was named for Huntingdon, England while other says it was named for an abundance of game. In 2002, Huntington was named an All-America City by the National Civic League.
There have been many notable people living in the area such as Mariah Carey (singer), Leroy Grumman (founder of Grumman Aircraft), Ralph Macchio (actor), Walt Whitman (poet), and Billy Joel (singer). Huntington is also home to The Heckscher Museum of Art is in Heckscher Park, which also has a small lake, playing fields and a playground. During the summer, free concerts and plays are staged at an outdoor amphitheater. As well as the annual Long Island Pride Parade, celebrating the Island's gay and lesbian community, receives wide turnouts, as does the Long Island Fall Festival, which attracts more than 250,000 visitors. Town beaches include Gold Star Battalion on West Shore Road and Mill Dam Park which borders Huntington Harbor.
North Shore Eye Care serves the residents of Huntington with a variety of concerns including ocular injuries. As opthalmologists we see many emergencies either during office hours or otherwise. Many of these injuries are preventable. While some of these can occur in the work place, they often occur during sports or even at home. Most workplace injuries involve getting metallic foreign bodies embedded on the cornea. While they are not terribly serious and can lead to scarring with visual loss. Because metallic foreign bodies react with corneal tissue as they begin to rust, they become more painful over time until they are removed. Sports injuries can occur in many different ways, some quite surpisingly with golf being a good example. In our office we saw one unfortunate person lose an eye when a golf ball ricocheted back after hitting a sign. But injuries can commonly occur even at home. Often they occur when chemicals accidently splash into the eye. When this happens it is important to immediately irrigate the eyes and then seek treatment. The problem with many injuries is that people are not always aware of the danger they are in immediately prior to the accident. When the dangers are apparent as with certain sports or mechanics they can often be prevented with something as simple as just using goggles.
Should an injury occur, at North Shore Eye Care we have very expanded hours from early morning to often late in the evening. Our office is open 6 days a week and we have coverage 24 hours a day. All of our physicians are Board Certified Ophthalmologists.
North Shore Care is committed to providing continuing education opportunities for Optometrists. For more information, please see our previous symposia or a list of upcoming events.
