Holbrook is a Hamlet located in Suffolk County within the Town of Islip and Brookhaven. Despite this variation in town government, the majority of Holbrook is located within the Town of Islip and completely within the Sachem School District, which is independent of town borders. Holbrook is located near the Long Island Expressway, Ronkonkoma train station, Sunrise Highway, MacArthur Airport, and the Fire Island ferries in Sayville.
In 1697, Holbrook was part of a Royal patent obtained by William Nicoll, a wealthy New York City Politician as he purchased the land area from the Secatogue Indians. Alexander McCotter also bought about 5000 acres and offered small tracts for sale in 1848. There was some confusion regarding how Holbrook got its name which both involved a stream or brook. One such story is that the community was called Old Brook while another is that the area started as Hollow Brook. During the 19th century, Holbrook was established as highly residential and agricultural community. There were also several establishments and buildings constructed including St. Johns Lutheran that is still active for today.
North Shore Eye Care serves the residents of Holbrook with a variety of concerns including Ptosis. The word Ptosis refers to an abnormal drooping of the upper eyelid. This may occur for many reasons. At North Shore Eye Care we typically see patients who have dermatochalasis, which is a fancy term that means your lids may be droopy from excess skin above your eyes that develops as we get older. Patients usually start to notice that one eye appears smaller than the other, which appears that way, but in reality its that one eye is droopier than the other. Some individuals find that their drooping eyelids actually make them feel sleepy, while others feel it gives them headaches because they constantly need to raise their eyebrows to lift the eyelids to see better. Many patients also find themselves lifting there head up and back to see better and that can lead to upper neck and back pain and strain.
When you see an ophthalmologist, they will examine your eyes and perform several tests to establish what the cause of your eyelid droop is. They will also perform measurements of your eyelids as well as take photographs of your eyelids. After examination, most people need an operation to treat significant Ptosis. The simplest procedure involves creating a small incision in the natural crease on your upper eyelid and removing excess skin. The incision site is then closed with stitches, which are typically removed in 7 days.
North Shore Care is committed to providing continuing education opportunities for Optometrists. For more information, please see our previous symposia or a list of upcoming events.
