The Incorporated Village of Belle Terreis in the Town of Brookhaven, on the North Shore of Long Island. A French-inspired gatehouse at the top of Port Jefferson’s East Broadway marks the entrance to Belle Terre. Prior to the 1600’s Belle Terre’s 1300 acres bordered on the west by Port Jefferson Harbor and on the north by Long Island Sound were inhabited by the Indians. They called the land Nonowantuc, “the stream that dries up.” In 1689 they deeded their land to three Englishmen who named it Mount Misery, due to all the shipwrecks in the area. In the 1700’s Mt. Misery passed into the Strong family of Strong’s Neck in whose possession it remained for over a hundred years. It was renamed Oakwood and the first original home in the area remained standing until 1960.
The community received the name “Belle Terre” from a developer who whished to turn the area into a resort for the wealthy. Belle Terre is located on Port Jefferson Harbor and therefore residents enjoy the North Shore beaches and boating. Access to the cove at the edge of Port Jefferson, an extremely beautiful natural landmark, is denied to non-residents protecting the privacy and exclusivity of the area.
North Shore Eye Care sees a number of patients from Belle Terre and the surrounding areas of Suffolk County due to cataracts. Cataracts are a clouding of the natural crystalline lens of the eye that occur as we age. When the symptoms of cataract become severe enough to interfere with quality of life, we entertain cataract surgery. These symptoms are glare with headlights while driving at night, glare with sunlight, and general blurred vision. Cataract surgery is performed through a microscopic incision using eye drop anesthesia at our Smithtown office in long island. We do not routinely use stitches, an eye patch or needles around the eyes. Our patients are able to return to the comfort of their home the very same day.
In cataract surgery, we place an intraocular lens implant in the eye following cataract removal. Some patients elect to have the standard implant that gives good distance vision only. These long islanders still use glasses for near work. For those patients that desire better range of vision without glasses, there are accommodating and multifocal premium implants that allow our patients to see far and near without glasses. These implants are the crystalens, tecnis multifocal, restor, rezoom and also the astigmatism correcting acrysof toric implant. Our board certified cataract surgeons discuss all of your options in a full eye exam prior to surgery.
North Shore Care is committed to providing continuing education opportunities for Optometrists. For more information, please see our previous symposia or a list of upcoming events.
