North Shore Eye Care held a continuing education program for optometrists on May 16. The program was designed to give back to the local optometric community by providing a first class day of continuing medical education, good food, and camaraderie. The day was a huge success with a wonderful variety of lectures and 100 eye doctors in attendance.
The day was started with a 15 minute retrospective on North Shore Eye Care by Dr. Sidney Martin, the founder of North Shore Eye Care. Dr. Sid Martin continues to practice ophthalmology at the age of 81 and his insight to the early days of eye care on long island were fascinating and enjoyed by all.
Dr. John Mauro followed with a lecture titled, "Uveitis and Anterior Segment Disease". Dr. Mauro is a fellowship trained uveitis specialist with North Shore Eye Care and his lecture was insightful and comprehensive when it comes to the field of intraocular inflammation.
Dr. Jeffrey Martin, managing partner of North Shore Eye Care and Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at SUNY Stony Brook gave a lecture on Clinical Pearls in Managing Cataract Surgery and Laser Vision Correction. Dr. Martin spoke about his current surgical technique in cataract surgery and lasik as well as the medication regimens currently used in surgery.
The keynote speaker was Dr. James Thimons from Conneticut. He spoke about controversies in anterior segment therapy and some new thoughts on external disease. Dr. Thimons is a world renowned lecturer and gave a comprehensive anterior segment lecture that was enjoyed by all.
Mary Pat Johnson spoke about co-management of surgery and also about the evolving relationship between optometry and ophthalmology. This talk was illuminating when it comes to the correct way to bill and manage patients when both an optometrist and ophthalmologist are involved. The eye surgeons at North Shore Eye Care are very supportive of co-management relationships and feel that the future of eye care on long island will take place with a strong emphasis on co-management.
Dr. Brett Rosenblatt, a retinal specialist at Vitroretinal Consultants in Long Island and Queens, gave a lecture on current concepts in retina. Dr. Rosenblatt spoke about the current treatment of diabetic retinopathy as well as age related macular degeneration. Dr. Rosenblatt gave an extremely interesting and complete lecture on the practice standard of care in retina.
Dr. Raju Sarwal, a glaucoma specialist from Long Island Surgical Care in Long Island, gave a lecture about the current standard of care in glaucoma management. Dr. Sarwal's talk was insightful and thorough for those eye doctors that choose to treat glaucoma in their eye care practices.
With this wonderful opportunity to get 6 Cope Approved CE credits, the day was a huge success. There was also great support from the eye care industry including Alcon, Allergan, Bausch and Lomb, Inspire, Ista, Abbott Medical Optics, CARR Business Systems, Lombart, Medcomp Systems, Suffolk County National Bank, Accutome, Vision Instruments, Biomarc, and the Saint James Investment Company.
