What Is LASIK?
LASIK, or Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, is a laser vision correction procedure performed to treat astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia, as well as higher-order refractive errors. Is LASIK Surgery Painful?
The advanced techniques utilized by the experienced physicians at North Shore Eye Care make LASIK surgery a safe, pain-free, and relatively quick procedure. At the beginning of the procedure, the surgeon administers eye drops to numb the eye. While this may cause mild irritation, patients will not experience any discomfort during the procedure. In an effort to maximize the comfort of our patients, we have recently opened a LASIK suite at our Smithtown location. Who Is a Candidate for LASIK?
The ideal candidate for LASIK is over the age of 18 with a prescription that has been stable for at least a year. He or she should also be free from any infections or chronic eye conditions such as dry eye. How Long Does the Procedure Take?

How Successful Is the Procedure?
According to the American Association of Professional Eyecare Specialists, 55.3 percent of LASIK patients achieve 20/20 vision following surgery, while 92.6 percent obtain 20/40 vision or better. The results of the procedure depend largely on the characteristics of the patient’s eyes and overall vision going into the surgery.
How Soon Can I Expect Results?
Patients who undergo LASIK surgery at North Shore Eye care are usually able to see functionally well within 24 hours of undergoing the procedure. Although some patients may experience blurred vision or sensitivity to light in the days after the procedure, this is normal and temporary. Vision usually continues to improve for one to three months after surgery.
