LASIK Pre-op InstructionsSmithtown, Riverhead, Long Island

This is when our LASIK patients get really excited.  You made the call to North Shore Eye Care in Smithtown or Riverhead, New York.  You came to one of our Long Island LASIK practices for a free consultation.  The best technology in LASIK was used to determine that you were a good candidate for laser vision correction including Pentacam corneal topography.  One of our board certified LASIK specialists evaluated your unique eyes and discussed the technology we use including iLASIK or bladeless custom LASIK.  Options were discussed and LASIK or PRK (LASEK) was deemed to be the best laser eye surgery procedure for you.  You met with one of our LASIK coordinators to discuss dates and finances and you were offered our zero percent financing for two years.  You were told that we are the Official LASIK Provider of the New York Mets and the Official Eye Care Provider of the New York Islanders and that we have a LIFETIME COMMITMENT with LASIK.   A date was chosen and now the day has come that will change your life.  You are committed to saying goodbye to glasses and contact lenses and we are thrilled to help.

Arrival at Our LASIK Center

Our LASIK Center is right in the Smithtown location of North Shore Eye Care.  The LASIK Center is new and equipped with the best technology including iLASIK (bladeless custom LASIK) and a Leibert HVAC system that keeps humidity and temperature tightly controlled.  You will be warmly greeted by our staff and will be brought to our pre-op area.  At that time, we will finish collecting the consent and we will offer you a mild sedative to relax.  Our beautiful LASIK center is calm and serene with limited activity to keep you comfortable.  A wavescan will be obtained at this time.  A wavescan is a custom map of your unique visual system.  Your visual system is unique to you much like your fingerprint and that is why custom laser vision correction gives the optimal outcome.  The wavescan map is transferred digitally into the laser vision correction laser for your procedure.

LASIK Pre-op Instructions

Prior to arriving at the LASIK Center, you will be given instructions to clean your lids and asked not to wear make-up or fragrances.  After consent is finished and a mild sedative is administered, we clean your eyes in a very specific way so that infection risk is minimized.  You then meet with your Smithtown LASIK surgeon, who will tell you how your LASIK procedure will proceed.  We let you know that the procedure takes about 10 minutes and that you have a blinking fixation light to look at during your LASIK surgery.  We let you know that you may feel mild pressure, but no pain and that we will be talking to you through laser eye surgery to make sure that you are comfortable.  Immediately after LASIK, we bring you to the post-op room and let you relax for a minute and then we check your eyes to make sure that they look perfect.  You are free to return home after that.

We recommend that you keep your eyes closed for three hours following LASIK to let your eyes rest and we place clear shields over your eyes for your protection until the next morning.  The only time you remove the clear shields is to administer eye drops, an antibiotic drop and an anti-inflammatory drop twice the first night.  We let you know that it is fine to eat and drink, but suggest that you otherwise take it easy that first night.  There is no need for pain medication because there is little to no discomfort in most cases.  We tell you that most LASIK patients are able to drive the very next day and that you may return to normal activity as well.  We do ask that you avoid rubbing your eyes for one month and that you do not swim for two weeks.

Congratulations on your LASIK

Following your LASIK procedure, our staff will congratulate you on your life-changing experience.  You made the decision to be free from contacts and glasses and many of our staff members share your same wonderful results.  The decision to have LASIK is a very personal one and we are honored that you have chosen North Shore Eye Care's amazing LASIK surgeons, Dr. Jeffrey Martin, Dr. John Mauro, Dr. Larry Zweibel, and Dr. Paul Choinski, to help you on your journey.  We work hard to be the eye care practice that you want to choose and we never take your confidence for granted.  Thank you Long Island for trusting North Shore Eye Care in Riverhead and Smithtown.
