Life after LASIK

After LASIK Surgery Smithtown

LASIK surgery has made it possible for thousands of our patients to take in every detail of the world around them, without the aid of eyeglasses or contacts. In fact, patients who undergo LASIK surgery are often able to enjoy clearer vision than ever before. The experienced eye care specialists at North Shore Eye Care are dedicated to helping patients get the most out of their vision after LASIK surgery. At our Smithtown and Riverhead office locations (located on Long Island), patients receive personalized and professional post-operative care.

Recovering after LASIK Surgery

Although LASIK surgery generally produces dramatic results, recovery typically takes only 24 to 48 hours. Patients who undergo the procedure at our Smithtown office can spend their initial recovery time in our luxury LASIK suite, which is designed to promote patient comfort throughout all stages of the procedure. Mild discomfort may occur immediately following the procedure, and patients are encouraged to keep their eyes closed as much as possible in the hours after surgery to reduce the risk of irritation. Symptoms that may occur immediately after LASIK surgery at our Smithtown or Riverhead practice include:

  • Sensitivity to light
  • Itching or burning of the eyes
  • Hazy or blurry vision
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Dry eyes

While these symptoms are not uncommon after LASIK surgery, they are generally mild and usually subside within a few days. Our physicians may provide patients with protective eyewear to prevent foreign matter from getting in the eyes and discourage patients from rubbing their eyes. Although blurry vision often subsides within 24 hours of the procedure, this time frame varies from patient to patient, and patients are advised not to return to work for at least two days after the procedure.

The Follow-up Appointment

Patients who undergo LASIK surgery should return to North Shore Eye Care within 48 hours of the procedure so that our doctors can monitor the healing process. During this appointment, our surgeons will perform a thorough eye examination, test the patient’s vision, and, if necessary, prescribe antibiotic eye drops to prevent infection in the eye. They will also address any patient concerns and provide further instructions for caring for the eyes during the recovery period. Patients should expect to undergo regular eye exams in the first few months after LASIK surgery to ensure that their vision is improving according to plan.

To promote a speedy recovery, there are several activities and habits that our surgeons recommend avoiding in the days and weeks following the procedure. These include:

  • Wearing eye makeup or lotions
  • Participating in contact sports
  • Rubbing the eyes
  • Swimming or using a hot tub
  • Excessive television or computer use

If you are uncertain about when you can return to a specific activity, the doctors and staff at North Shore Eye Care are always available to answer your questions and assist in your recovery.

When to Expect Results after LASIK

Patients who undergo laser vision correction at North Shore Eye Care often experience improvement in their vision within 24 hours of the procedure. It is important to note, however, that changes to the eye will occur subtly during the months after LASIK surgery, and patients should expect their vision to stabilize in about one to three months. While some may prefer to wear glasses while performing certain tasks such as reading or driving, many are able to eliminate dependence on corrective eyewear. In fact, nearly 93 percent of LASIK surgery patients achieve 20/40 vision or better after surgery.

Committed to Your Results

Patients who undergo LASIK surgery at our Long Island-area practice further benefit from our one-of-a-kind North Shore Eye Care Lifetime Commitment. In addition to helping our patients throughout their initial recovery, we are dedicated to their long-term results.
