LASIK Laser Vision Correction
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, more than 700,000 LASIK procedures are performed each year in the United States, making it by far the most popular laser vision correction procedure. LASIK, or Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, is a surgical procedure performed to correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism through the permanent alteration of the shape of the cornea. The surgeon uses a hand-held blade called a microkeratome to make an incision in the uppermost layer of the cornea, creating a flap through which he is able to access the deeper corneal tissues. An excimer laser, approved by the FDA for use in laser eye surgery, is then used to reshape these tissues, guided by preliminary measurements that are taken during the pre- LASIK exam. Once the necessary changes in shape have been made, the surgeon replaces the flap, which bonds quickly to the cornea. With no stitches required, healing time is fast, and most patients are able to return to their routine activities the day after surgery.

iLASIK , sometimes referred to as IntraLASIK, is a variation on the traditional LASIK procedure, in which laser technology is used to perform every stage of the surgery, including the creation of the corneal flap.
Many patients have avoided undergoing LASIK surgery simply because they are uncomfortable with the idea of a blade being used to make an incision in their eyes. iLASIK eliminates the need for this blade by using IntraLase™ technology for a controlled, exact, and safe method of creating the corneal flap.
To make the procedure even safer and more precise and personalized, our surgeons utilize CustomVue™ and WaveScan™ technology to map even the most minute flaws in the shape of the cornea prior to surgery. While conventional LASIK remains a highly effective procedure, iLASIK is ideal for patients who are not suitable candidates for LASIK, such as those with particularly thin corneas.
PRK is a procedure that, like LASIK, uses an excimer laser to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Unlike LASIK, however, PRK is performed on the surface of the cornea, rather than on its deeper layers. As a result, PRK (often referred to as advanced surface ablation or LASEK) does not require the creation of a corneal flap. This method was most popular before the advanced technology of LASIK and iLASIK became available, but is still offered at our Smithtown and Riverhead locations as an effective alternative to patients who are not eligible for those procedures.

Regardless of the specific method of treatment that a patient chooses, laser vision correction offers a number of benefits, including:
LASIK surgery can be used to correct many vision deficiencies including hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism. Individuals who wish to undergo LASIK surgery should be at least 18 years old, be in general good health, and not suffer from conditions such as dry eye or glaucoma. It is also important that potential patients understand the risks associated with the procedure, and have realistic expectations for their vision after surgery. During an eye exam before surgery, our doctors will explain the procedure and respond to any questions or concerns.
The physicians at North Shore Eye Care have helped thousands of patients improve their vision and their lives with laser vision correction. Sophisticated techniques and technology have made it possible to achieve precise, long-lasting results.
