When a cataract is removed, an intraocular lens implant is placed to restore vision. Today, patients can choose to have premium implants that allow patients to see near and far without glasses in many cases. Accommodating lenses like the Crystalens move in the eye and increase depth of vision in that way. When the focusing muscles of the eye flex, the lens moves forward slightly bringing near images into focus. The eye is able to focus from far to near with Crystalens. The multifocal implants have rings that alternate far and near. With this lens, patients are able to simultaneously see far and near. Multifocal implants include Restor, Rezoom, and Tecnis Multifocal. There is also a lens that reduces or eliminates astigmatism called the Acrysof Toric. This lens allows patients that would normally need glasses after cataract surgery to see without the need for glasses or contact lenses.
