Early Detection Can Prevent Vision Degradation

Cataracts Diagnosis – Smithtown, Riverhead, Long Island

A cataract that is left untreated can degrade over time, progressively impairing vision in the affected eye. There are ways to prevent or help delay a cataract from developing, however, and if the condition is caught early, non-surgical treatment may be sufficient to provide correction. Because of this, it is highly recommended that you seek care as soon as possible if your vision has become blurred or clouded. Through cataracts diagnosis - offered at our Smithtown, Riverhead, and Long Island practice locations - we can determine a treatment plan that helps alleviate your symptoms and allows you to improve your quality of life. Seek treatment today if you suffer from poor vision; our team of eye surgeons has the experience and expertise needed to help.

Cataracts Symptoms

Vision impairment can produce a number of side effects. As cataracts slowly worsen over time, the symptoms may not be obvious at first. In fact, you may adapt to them as your vision degrades. Because of this, you may seek treatment much later than you should. Early detection can allow us to explore your treatment options and help delay the onset of the condition. If you experience any vision impairment, it is important that you seek diagnosis. Common symptoms of cataracts include:

  • Blurred or cloudy vision
  • Muted colors
  • Lack of definition
  • Glare or the appearance of halos around light sources
  • Inhibited night vision
  • Double vision
  • A marked degradation in your visual prescription over time (for eyeglass users)

If caught early, it may be possible to delay or prevent the onset of cataracts. Wearing sunglasses or wide-brim hats while outside, for example, can help reduce exposure to UV rays, and prevent the breakdown of proteins in the cornea. Smoking or a poor diet can also contribute to the formation of a cataract. By quitting smoking and eating a healthy, balanced diet rich in vegetables and fruits, you can delay or prevent a cataract from forming. If a cataract is present but detected early, it may also be possible to treat it non-surgically through the use of corrective lenses or simply by using brighter lights while indoors.

Cataracts Diagnosis

There are several techniques that can be utilized for cataracts diagnosis. At our Long Island office locations, including Smithtown and Riverhead, we can evaluate your vision and determine whether you have a cataract. If so, we will determine the best course of action to alleviate your symptoms and treat the condition. Cataracts diagnosis typically consists of:

  • Visual Acuity Test - A standard visual acuity test will give us an indication of your vision quality. If you perform poorly, that doesn't unto itself indicate that you have a cataract. Any number of vision impairments, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, can result in poor visual acuity. However, poor results will indicate that vision treatment is necessary.
  • Dilated Eye Exam - In this test, eye drops are administered to widen or dilate the eye pupils. Once the eye is dilated, a special optical lens is used to examine the retina and optic nerve. We can also look for visual signs of a cataract. The eyes will remain dilated for several hours after treatment, and you will be asked to wear tinted lenses to protect your eyes from light.
  • Tonometry - With this instrument, the pressure inside the eye can be measured. Constant pressure on the eye can be a contributing factor to the formation of a cataract, so detecting such pressures can help us alleviate or eliminate contributing factors.

Early detection allows us to provide early treatment. If you are suffering from blurred or cloudy vision, please don't hesitate to seek treatment.
