A patient is told that they need cataract surgery. How do you choose your surgeon? What do you want to know about cataract surgery and does it make a difference who performs it? Cataract surgery has been performed by varying techniques for many years. The incisions were made large with stiches to close them. Implants were rigid at first so an incision had to be quite a bit larger. This type of surgery required general anesthesia because local anesthesia would not have been enough. Today, incisions are much smaller. At North Shore Eye, Dr. Jeffrey Martin and Dr. Zweibel utilize a 2 millimeter incision to perform the entire procedure. Because cataract surgery is quick and relatively pain free, eye drop anesthesia is used instead of injections around the eye or general anesthesia.
