cataracts
cataracts, or a clouding of the natural crystalline lens within the eye are a major cause of worldwide visual loss. surgery to enhance vision for this problem has been documented to at least 2000 B.C. it wasn't until the mid 20th cntury that great strides in surgical rehabilitaion occurred. In 1949 Sir Harold Ridley noticed when an airforce had an imbedded piece of plastic in his eye from the airplane canopy that it caused no reaction. from this observation the age of intraocular lens implantation was born. no longer would people require thick spectacles to replace a cataractous lens. recently newer lenses have been developed that significantly reduce the need for glasses following cataract surgery. one type of lens is called the crystalens made by bausch and lomb. northshore eye care and its surgeons have been named the crystalens center of excellence. these same surgeons, Drs. lawrence zweibel and jeffrey martin have also been listed in Castle Connolly's top doctors over the past
