 Many studies have shown that close to over one-third of cases remain undiagnosed. Risk factors for glaucoma include race, age, diabetes, smoking and family history. At North Shore Eye Care we see many patients with all types of glaucoma. Glaucoma occurs in both children and young adults although more common in adults.

Macular degeneration is a widespread eye condition that causes loss of central vision in patients.  Typically, macular degeneration is an eye problem of advancing age and is more typical in fair skin and light eyed patients.  Macular degeneration runs in families and tends to occur slowly; therefore regular eye examinations are important.  The eye doctors at North Shore Eye Care in Smithtown new york in Long island examine many patients with this eye problem and typically see drusen or calcification in the macula, which is the center of the retina, as the first sign.  Patient complain of metamorphopsia which describes distortion of a visual image.  There are treatments for macular degeneration including eye vitamins, laser and possible injections for wet macular degeneration.  Macular degeneration is dry when there is no bleeding under the retina and wet when new blood vessels form and start to bleed under the retina.  As patients age, cataracts devel
