North Shore Eye Care has been a leader in cataract surgery for many years. Dr. Sidney Martin founded the Smithtown New York practice back in 1960 and at that time, the eye care practice cared for patients with glaucoma, macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetes, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye, and other eye conditions. Over the years, with the addition of Dr. Larry Zweibel, Dr. Jeff martin and more recently Dr John Mauro, North Shore Eye Care continued as a leading general eye care practice, but there was a specialty in cataract surgery and laser vision correction that occurred. Cataract surgery at North Shore Eye Care takes about ten minutes and is done with topical anesthesia with IV sedation. There are no needles around the eyes, no stitches, and no eye patch following the cataract treatment. Our patients are able to stay in their own clothes and return home the very same day. There is no hospital stay. As a matter of fact, 99 percent of our cataract surgery is done at an outpatient surgery center.
When a cataract is removed from your eye, our board certified cataract surgeons place an intraocular lens implant to restore your vision. We can use a monofocal distance implant, but with that you will still need glasses for near tasks including reading your watch, cell phone, menus, putting on make-up, and other close tasks. There is an accommodating implant called Crystalens that moves slightly in the eye to expand the depth of focus. With Crystalens, a patient is able to see far and near and in most cases, patients no longer use glasses for any tasks. It is possible that you may still need a light magnifier for close work even with Crystalens, but the overall dependence on glasses is reduced dramatically. With the multifocal implants, Tecnis Multifocal, Rezoom, and Restor, a ring design allows a patient to see simultaneously far and near. These lenses also work well to eliminate glasses for near and far. Our eye surgeons also use many Acrysof Toric implants to eliminate astigmatism in most cases.
