An interesting statistic that highlights the importance of maintaining good health is that people over the age of 65 consume 10 times the eye care as those under this age. It's a good thing Medicare starts at age 65.

As cataract surgery continues to evolve many new choices have become available to patients. A cataract is a natural lens within the eye no longer functions properly because of loss of clarity making normal tasks difficult to perform. Environment and heredity are factors that can influence cataract formation, but as people age all people get some degree of cataract formation.
August 01, 2010 @ 01:45 PM — by Lawrence Zweibel
As cataract surgery has become more sophisticated it has become important for patients to know their surgical options. First and foremost is to know when the procedure is indicated. It is surprising how many patients think the proper time for surgery is when the cataract has become ripe. The big problem here is knowing when that happens. You could rely on your eye doctor, but the reality is that you, the patient know best when you need surgery. Everybody's needs and tolerance for poor vision varies. For instance if you need to drive at night and you are no longer comfortable with activity it may be time to consider surgery. Once the decision to have surgery has been made the next big decision is to decide what type of lens will best suit your needs.

At North Shore Eye Care, here in our Smithtown, Long island, we perform the most advanced cataract surgery available. Cataract surgery has come a long way in the last thirty years. Through the use of conscious sedation, an incision under three millimeters is made in the cornea and the cataract is removed using high speed ultrasound (phacoemulsification). The entire procedure usually lasts about ten minutes. In our practice, needle injections around the eye are rare used and hence we do not routinely use sutures or patches. This gives our patients who are on anticoagulation (Coumadin, Plavix, Aspirin)the ability to continue there medicine prior to and after surgery. Our patients usually have quick recovery and are able to see right away.
We are happy to offer the latest in intraocular lenses in cataract surgery. Dr. Lawrence Zweibel, Dr. Jeffrey Martin and Dr. John Mauro use premium intraocular lenses such as: Crystalens, Acrysof Toric, Restor and Technis. Therefore

The natural lens of the eye over time, becomes clouded. This is called a cataract. During the cataract procedure, the eye surgeon makes a small incision in the cornea about the size of a pencil tip. Then using ultrasound technology, the cataract is removed in a matter of minutes and carefully inserted is the new lens, either a monofocal or premium IOL(intraocular lens). A similar procedure is used to remove the natural lens for the patient who does not have cataracts but desires decreased dependence on glasses, either as an alternative to LASIK or PRK, they do not qualify for LASIK or PRK because there prescription is to large or to eliminate reading glasses in general. In this case, the patient may elect have a premium IOL. This is also called “clear lens exchange.” Drs.
