Cataract surgery and presbyopia…how will I see following cataract surgery….ask the cataract experts in Smithtown New York Long Island

Posted under: cataract surgery and presbyopia— nseye @ 7:20 am

Presbyopia is an aging process of the eye that causes people with good distance vision to need reading glasses in the 40s. People that are nearsighted or myopic tend to need bifocals or they need to take off their distance glasses to see near. Farsighted or hyperopic patients start needing reading glasses in their 40s and then need distance as well some years later. Everyone is affected by presbyopia and it can be quite an adjustment. The reason for presbyopia is that the natural lens of the eye becomes more dense as we age and when the internal muscles of focus or accommodation flex, they can no longer change the shape of the lens and therefore little focusing change results. At North Shore Eye Care , our board certified eye doctors and eye surgeons perform cataract surgery hundreds of times each year and a discussion about postoperative visual needs is imperative. Cataract surgery is quick and painless in most cases and our cataract surgeons, Dr. Jeff Martin, Dr. Larry Zweibel and Dr. John Mauro rarely use stitches, an eye patch, or needles in their cataract surgery.

When we replace the cloudy lens or cataract of the eye with an intraocular lens implant or IOL, there are choices that affect your degree of dependence on glasses after the cataract treatment. Accommodating implants like the crystalens allows for far and near vision without glasses or contact lenses. North Shore eye has been named a National Crystalens Center of Excellence by Bausch and Lomb. We also use multifocal implants like tecnis multifocal, rezoom, and restor that also allow for far and near vision without glasses or contact lenses. We enjoy using the Acrysof Toric implant that reduces or eliminates astigmatism. If a small adjustment is needed after surgery, we perform ilasik or bladeless custom lasik at no charge.
