Multifocal Implants vs Accommodating Implants in Cataract Surgery….Ask the cataract experts in Smithtown New York in Long Island

Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure. A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye that occurs as we age. Some patients get cataract changes earlier in life, but most people develop visually significant cataracts in their 60s, 70s and 80s. Some things make cataracts worse such as smoking, UV light like sunlight, steroids and other medications as well as family history. At North shore eye Care in Smithtown New York in Suffolk county of Long island, our board certified eye doctors and eye surgeons specialize in cataract surgery and cataract treatment. When a cataract is removed, we replace it with an intraocular lens or IOL which restores vision. Standard implants give mostly distance vision and patients still need glasses for close, but there is a group of IOLs that give far and near vision, called premium IOLs and consist of multifocal implants and accommodating implants.

With multifocal implants, patients are able to see far and near. Patients can not have astigmatism for this lens to work well, so astigmatism must be corrected if present. These implants work by a patient having simultaneous near and far vision through a series of rings in the lens that alternate for near and far. When a patient looks near, vision is seen through the near rings. When a patient looks through the distance rings, they see far. These lenses work well, but they do take some adapting and patients can see rings around lights at night and reduced clarity of vision due to splitting light between near and far. These implants are the Restor, Rezoom, and Tecnis Multifocal.

Dr. Jeff Martin and dr. Larry Zweibel of North Shore Eye Care are proud that their practice has been named a Crystalens Center of Excellence. Crystalens is an accommodating implant that allows patients to see far and near by a different mechanism. With crystalens, the patient gets 100% of the light for far and near which increases clarity of the image in comparison to multifocals. The natural muscles of focus are used to move the lens slightly forward and allow an image to be clear at far and near. This lens movement allows for greater range of vision. This lens movement is what naturally occurs in the eye when it is young. With Crystalens, there are no rings around lights at night and no decrease in contrast, but sometimes the amount of near vision is not quite as good as a patient would want it to be. Our cataract doctors and cataract surgeons, Dr. Martin, Dr. Zweibel, and Dr. Mauro have all enjoyed the amazing results of this lens.

In Long island in Suffolk and Nassau County, we see patients from Cold Spring Harbor, plainview, woodbury, syosset, bethpage, manhasset, huntington, commack, northport, centerport, greenlawn, dix hills, deer park, melville, bay shore, babylon, massapequa, lindenhurst, copaigue, islip, islandia, smithtown, nesconset, saint james, kings park, and many other towns.
