In years past, we used to perform a needle injection behind the eye which has danger associated with it because it is a blind needle injection and there are many nerves and blood vessels in the area of the injection. There were measures to make the injection safer like blunting the needle tip, but unavoidable complications such as retrobulbar hemorrhage and eye muscle damage were always possible and did happen. By switching to eye drop numbing of the eye, Dr. Martin, Dr. Zweibel and Dr. Mauro avoid all possible complications from needle injections. Some eye doctors still use needle injections; we do not. In order to perform cataract surgery without stitches or sutures, the eye surgeon must make an excellent incision that seals well.
