What is really behind no stitch no patch no shot cataract surgery…..ask the cataract doctors at North shore Eye Care in Long Island new york

What is really behind modern cataract surgery? How is it different? Is it hype or truly better. Dr. Jeffrey Martin, a cataract surgeon and cataract doctor at North Shore eye Care will try to answer these questions. Dr. Jeff Martin and dr. Larry Zweibel are both board certified eye doctors that have both been included in “Top Doctors: New York Metro Area” by Castle Connolly. Dr. Martin, Dr. Zweibel along with Dr. John Mauro perform about one thousand cataract surgery procedures each year out of their Smithtown nEW yORK office in Suffolk County of Long Island.

The way that North Shore Eye Care performs cataract surgery is with topical or eye drop anesthesia with IV sedation for relaxation. In years past, we used to perform a needle injection behind the eye which has danger associated with it because it is a blind needle injection and there are many nerves and blood vessels in the area of the injection. There were measures to make the injection safer like blunting the needle tip, but unavoidable complications such as retrobulbar hemorrhage and eye muscle damage were always possible and did happen. By switching to eye drop numbing of the eye, Dr. Martin, Dr. Zweibel and Dr. Mauro avoid all possible complications from needle injections. Some eye doctors still use needle injections; we do not. In order to perform cataract surgery without stitches or sutures, the eye surgeon must make an excellent incision that seals well. Incisions in cataract surgery are under 3 millimeters but still need to made precisely every case. Our board certified eye doctors pay special attention to cataract incisions and therefore rarely need to place a suture. Because they eye is not completed paralyzed with a needle injection, patients are able to use their eye immediately and not wear a patch. The patch was used because when an eye is that numb, a patient would not feel an injury or problem.

At North Shore eye Care in Smithtown New York, we specialize in accommodating implants and multifocal implants like the crystalens HD, crystalens 5.0, tecnis multifocal, restor, rezoom as well as the Acrysof Toric implant for astigmatism.
