How do you treat glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an eye disease that causes permanent vision loss. the doctors at North Shore Eye Care routinely evaluate all of their patients for potential glaucoma risk.  They do this by measuring several factors including eye pressure, cup to disc ratio of the optic nerve, corneal thickness, and by viewing the anatomy of the anterior chamber structures and angles.  North Shore Eye Care has offices through out Long Island including Riverhead, Smithtown, Holbrook, and Deer Park. They are available to do glaucoma evaluations at all of their offices.

Patients determined to be at risk for developing glaucoma are asked to undergo more thorough testing including visual field analysis and optic nerve imaging.  Depending on the severity of their glaucoma risk, patients may be scheduled for repeat evaluations every 4 to 6 months.  Glaucoma causes peripheral vision loss over time.  It is often asymptomatic so patients do not realize that they are slowly going blind.  This is why it is so important that patients have regular eye exams, and those that are suspicious for glaucoma be followed regularly.

Glaucoma treatment may include a combination of eye drops, lasers and surgery.  All of these treatments are aimed at lowering the pressure in the eyes.  The eye doctors at North Shore Eye Care provide the very best for all of their patients
