Dr. Sidney Martin founded North Shore Eye Care in 1961. As a result of Dr. Martin's caring and expertise our practice has expanded from a small office on Maple Avenue to our new, modern facility on Middle Country Road in Smithtown. In addition to our Smithtown office we now have locations in Deer Park, Holtsville, and as far East as Riverhead.
Dr. Martin was actually Smithtown's first Ophthalmologist. At that time Smithtown was far more rural with a lot of farm country. Ophthalmologists were expected to be expert in all fields of eye care. This included caring for patients with retinal detachments, various types of lid and orbital repair, glaucoma, and of course cataract surgery. Over the years Ophthalmology became far more intricate and soon Ophthalmologists started taking fellowships that enabled them to subspecialize in these various aspects of eye care.
Dr. Zweibel, director of Ophthalmology at St. Catherine's Hospital in Smithtown, joined Dr. Martin in 1976 and introduced intraocular lens implantation to Smithtown. Prior to this patients who underwent cataract surgery were fitted with thick glasses after their procedure to compensate for the cataract that was removed. By implanting an intraocular lens at the time of surgery patients were afforded a more natural vision.
In 1998 we were fortunate to have Dr. Sidney Martin's son Jeffrey join our practice. This exceptional surgeon is a well liked Clinical Professor of Opthalmology at Stony Brook University. Both Dr. Martins and Dr. Zweibel have been consistently recognized in Castle Connelly's Top Doctors in the New York Metro area.
Two years ago Dr. John Mauro joined our practice. Well liked by all his patients he has won many patient Choice Awards. An expert in ocular inflammation he also gets numerous referral from other eye care physicians. Following Dr. Mauro's arrival things began to expand rapidly. We are now joined by Dr. Sonya Dahr, a specialist in glaucoma, who has been an invaluable asset in the management of this condition. To round out the field Dr. Nichols, a fellowship trained plastic Opthtalmologist has joined us, as well as Drs. Choinsky, Greenberg, and O'Malley.
By expanding as we have we are able to offer our patients the very finest in subspecialty care, but above all our philosophy is to offer this care in a caring and friendly setting.
