The Eye doctors at North Shore Eye Care with offices in Smithtown, Riverhead, Holbrook, and Deer Park while excelling in lasik and cataract surgery, are a complete eye care facility. We have specialists in plastics, glaucoma, and uveitis,  which involves all types of inflammation and immunologic disease.  We also have advanced technology that aids in the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases.

The retina is a fascinating area of the body in that it is the only area where we can directly visualize the vessels in your body.  This can be very helpful when diagnosing diabetes and hypertension.  Diabetes which occurs when blood sugar exceeds normal levels either due to lack of insulin production or due to increased insulin resistance, such as in obesity can lead to damage of vessels throughout the body.  Abnormal vessels in the kidney can lead to hypertension.  When the vessels of the eye are effected areas of hemorrhage, proteinaceous exudate, and swelling can be visualized.  To help the doctors diagnose problems of the retina that can be so subtle as to not be readily diagnosed with direct visualization, we now utilize advanced technologic tools such as optical coherent tomography that can give a microscopic analysis of your retina.

Dr. John Mauro, a fellowship trained ocular surgeon from Mass. General in Boston training under Dr. Stephen Foster, now gets referrals from physicians all over Long Island with complaints of ocular inflammation.  Inflammation within the eye can signal more systemic problems within the body that require treatment such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and Lupus Erythematosis.

Dr. Sonia Dhar who is a fellowship trained glaucoma specialist receiving her training from Dr Alan Crandall in Utah has been an invaluable asset in diagnosing and treating our many glaucoma patients.
