Cataract Surgery Seminar tomorrow in Smithtown Long Island

January 18, 2012 @ 01:38 PM — by Jeff Martin

There is a cataract surgery seminar in Smithtown Long Island New York tomorrow at North Shore Eye Care given by Dr. Jeffrey Martin.  All attendees will receive a gift and all questions regarding cataract surgery will be answered.  North Shore Eye Care is currently having a year long celebration for their 50th anniversary.  Dr. Sidney Martin started North Shore Eye Care in Smithtown New York 50 years ago and today, there are locations including Riverhead, Holbrook, and Deer Park.  Dr. Martin and his son, Jeffrey, have worked hard to make sure that  all Long Islanders have access to the best of eye care including state of the art cataract surgery.

What is a cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye that happens with age.  Some patients develop visually significant cataract earlier in life and you can even be born with it.  Certain medications and overexposure to sunlight also cause cataract as well as certain medical conditions.  When a cataract becomes severe enough to interfere with a patient's quality of life, cataract surgery is considered.  In cataract surgery, the cloudy lens of the eye is removed using computer controlled ultrasound called phacoemulsification and a new implant lens is placed.  The implant is made of plastic and depending on the implant lens that you choose, patients can reduce or eliminate their need for glasses or contact lenses.  There are multifocal implants that allow patients to see far and near.  There are accommodating lenses like Crystalens that allow an increased range of vision as well.  The Acrysof Toric implant reduces or eliminates astigmatism in patients that have astigmatism.  There are so many choices today and they are all excellent.  For the patient that does not mind wearing glasses, a standard implant lens allows for clear vision, but glasses are usually necessary to some extent.  In your evaluation, your North Shore Eye Care board certified eye surgeon will discuss your options with you and make sure that you are comfortable with your decision.

The Day of Cataract Surgery

The day of cataract surgery, you will be in our surgery center for about three hours.  You are able to stay in your own comfortable clothes and receive IV sedation for relaxation.  Eye drops are used to numb the surface of the eye and the cataract operation takes about 10 minutes.  There are no painful injections, no eye patches and no stitches.  Our cataract surgeons are constantly updating their knowledge and surgical skill so that you are always getting the best procedure for you.  After cataract surgery, you should have little to no pain and return home to start your healing eye drops.  You will be able to see right away, but vision will improve over the next few days to weeks.

So what are you waiting for... come in and see Dr. Jeffrey Martin's cataract seminar and consider the improvement in quality of life that clear crisp vision can give.  Of course, it is important that we thoroughly examine your eyes to make sure that there are not other factors that are causing blurred vision.  That is determined in your initial evaluation.
