North Shore Eye Care to host cataract seminar this Thurs. at 12 P.M.

January 14, 2012 @ 06:44 PM — by Lawrence Zweibel

The cataract specialists at North Shore Eye Care will be hosting a cataract seminar this Thursday at 12P.M.   Refreshments will be served for all those who have not yet had lunch.  Additionally $25 dollar gift cards will be offered to all attendees.  The real reason to come to this seminar is to learn about the exciting new technology associated with this procedure.

Cataracts, which are a clouding of the natural lens of the eye are removed through a microscopic, self-sealing incision.  Performed as an outpatient procedure patient stay at the surgi-center is only about 2 hours.  This is quite a change from the way cataract surgery was performed as little as 40 years ago when a three day hospital stay was required and visual rehabilitation was a slow taking weeks to recover.  Intraocular lens implants used to replace the extracted cataract were not yet in vogue, so patients had to adjust to thick cataract glasses.  Visual perception through these glasses was vastly different as objects appeared 20% larger.  In order to avoid double vision patients required cataract surgery on the second eye or were required to wear a contact lens in the unoperated eye, a daunting task for the elderly.

All this is changed with modern surgery. Today's aspheric lenses give extremely sharp vision, both during daylight ours and at night.  This is a delight to many of our elderly patients who have not driven in years.  Moreover, our cataract specialists who have been recognized in Castle Connelly's Top Doctors in the New York Metro area are skilled in implanting the newer specialty lenses that are now available on the market.  This includes lenses that correct large amounts of astigmatism.  Astigmatism occurs when parallel rays of light are not focused properly on the retina in the back of the eye.  Since this is not corrected by cataract surgery implanting these lenses known as toric lenses can greatly reduce the need for glasses.  Also available are two brands of multifocal lenses as well as an accommodative lens from Bausch and Lomb.  These lenses allow patients to see both far and near without the use of glasses, much like you did when you were younger.

Dr. Jeffrey Martin, a clinical professor at Stony Brook University will be hostiing this seminar. So come to this informative talk and I'm sure you will learn a lot, and while your at it bring a friend.
