LASIK or PRK

When it comes to the best procedure for you, we have to get the fact first.  About 70 percent of our laser vision correction patients are able to have LASIK.  With LASIK, we are bladeless and custom in every case.  This means that we use the safest and most advanced procedure available.  Every flap is made with Intralase, a blade-free laser that makes the most precise flaps possible.  We then do the correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism with Customvue.  Customvue gets a map of each patient's unique visual system that is then corrected using iris registration, automatic tracking and automatic centering.  The whole process takes about 10 minutes and patients are able to drive to the office the very next day in most cases.

In those patients with thin corneas, high prescriptions, irregular corneas or significant dry eyes, we do advanced surface ablation which is also referred to as PRK, LASEK, or EpiLASIK.  These are all surface procedures that deliver the same excellent visual result as LASIK, but the healing time is longer and more uncomfortable.  With PRK, the epithelium or skin layer of the eye is removed and the laser vision correction is placed on the surface of the cornea.  By doing the laser eye surgery on the surface of the cornea, there is more cornea sparred and left untouched.  This increases safety in borderline patients and that is why we do approximately 30 % surface procedures.
