North Shore Eye Care in Riverhead and Smithtown, Long Island, are cataract surgery experts performing over one thousand cataract procedures each year. We have the technology including precise measurements for cataract surgery with IOL Master and automated corneal readings. We also have excellent technique in astigmatism control with limbal relaxing incisions and LASIK for the best visual result possible. All cataract surgery is not the same and our patients realize that.
In cataract surgery at North Shore Eye Care, we use IV sedation to relax our patients. They stay in their own comfortable clothes and there is no need for general anesthesia. Using eye drops to numb the surface of the eye, we are able to remove the cataract or cloudy lens of the eye, using high speed ultrasound through a microscopic incision. Needles around the eye are not necessary. Stitches and eye patches are also not necessary. Our cataract surgery takes a few minutes and our patients are able to return to the comfort of their home the very same day. The nice thing about not using an eye patch is that patients are able to start their important postoperative eye drops right away and our seniors are able to use both eyes right away. Having one eye patched can be a bit dangerous when trying to move around after eye surgery.
There are several implant lenses that can be used following the removal of the cataract. The standard lens gives patients excellent distance vision in most cases, except when significant astigmatism is present. We are also experts at the astigmatism correcting implant, the Toric implant. We also use the implants that allow patients to see far and near like the Crystalens, the Tecnis Multifocal and the Restor. These implants allow many patients to be completely free from glasses. It is important that you discuss this with our eye surgeons to see if you are a good candidate for one of these implants. When using some of the premium implants, precision of result is crucial. We offer free bladeless custom LASIK enhancements if they are necessary. Approximately one in twenty may need a bit of an enhancement to give the very best visual benefit. If needed, we do that at no charge.
