Complete eye care at North Shore Eye Care
At North Shore Eye Care we offer complete eye care to all our patients with specialists in many fields of Ophthalmology. Simple problems that we are commonly faced with are pink eyes, dry eyes and foreign bodies. More serious problems can lead to visual loss. Sometimes patients aren't aware of visual loss until significant, often permanent damage has occurred. Unfortunately this is seen all too often with glaucoma, a disease that appears to have a greater prevalence with Blacks over Whites. If caught early enough visual loss can usually be prevented. The same is true for other common diseases such an macula degeneration and diabetes. Cataracts luckily are treatable even if advanced, although certainly visual recovery is faster if the cataract is dealt with in timely fashion.
This time of year one of the problems frequently encountered is dry eyes. This is exacerbated by dry heat found in your home, office environment, and in cars and planes. This is especially true in arid climates in the mid-west, but it's still a big nuisance here on Long Island. The use of computer and video display terminals makes the problem still worse as use of computers as well as even reading a book is associated with a decreased blink rate contributing to dry, fatigued eyes. The incidence of dry eyes increases with age with approximately 8-16% of people aged 50 or over suffering from this disease. Women seem to be affected more than twice as often as men.
At North Shore Eye Care our Board Certified Surgeons offer the latest cataract surgery involving micro-incisions enabling patients to leave the surgery suite without a patch and return to work the next day. When having cataract surgery it is important to discuss with your surgeon different lens implant options. Patients who were near-sighed all their lives may be disturbed if following surgery they find their focus was adjusted so that they could see well in the distance without glasses, near objects are now a complete blur. For these people there are many alternatives, but they need to be addressed prior to surgery. Such patients can be left near-sighted if that's their choice, they can have monovision where one lens remains somewhat near-sighted while the other eye is adjusted for good uncorrected distance vision. Another excellent alternative offered at North Shore Eye Care is to implant one of the newer high technology lenses that offer both near and far vision without the need for glasses.
Whatever your eye care needs we look forward to caring for you both in our newly expanded Smithtown office or in Riverhead.
