Modern Cataract Surgery

Modern cataract surgery is performed through a microscopic incision without stitches or needles around the eyes.  No patch is needed over the eye and patients are able to return home the very same day.  For our patients, they are able to stay in their own clothes and receive IV sedation for relaxation.  Our board certified cataract surgeons then remove the cloudy cataract using high speed ultrasound called phacoemulsification.  With this technique, the cataract is broken up in the eye and removed through a small incision.  Once the cloudy cataract is removed, a new implant lens is used to restore vision.  There are several types of intraocular lens implants.  The standard implant is covered by insurance and corrects near and farsightedness.  Patients that are interested in reducing the need for glasses and contact lenses may elect to have a premium implant like a multifocal or accommodating implant like Crystalens, Restor, or Tecnis Multifocal.  These implants are designed to allow a patient a better range of vision without glasses.  There are also Toric implants that correct astigmatism.
