LASIK has come a long way over the past 15 years. The board certified LASIK experts at North Shore Eye Care have been leaders in LASIK and are ready to help you on your journey to clear vision. When our Long Island eye doctors starting doing LASIK in the 1990s, every flap that was made as the first step of the LASIK procedure was done with a blade machine called a microkeratome. A microkeratome is a metal machine with many moving parts that would occasionally jam or break and cause a poor quality flap. Our Smithtown and Riverhead patients encountered few problems even back then, but the complications were almost always related to the LASIK flap. Today, all of our laser vision correction flaps are made with Intralase, a bladeless blade-free laser that makes a safer and more precise flap. In the old days, flap thickness and quality would vary greatly, but today we have much better control of making flaps in LASIK.
When is came to the vision correction part of the laser eye surgery procedure, back then every minus one was the same. We would type in your eye prescription and that was it. The laser did not customize at all. All of our eyes have a unique shape and size so some of the fine irregularities left behind in non-custom LASIK would cause patients to have more night vision problems such as glare and halos. Also, the machine did not track or center eye movements so it was possible to laser off center of the patient was looking in the wrong direction. Also, astigmatism correction was always difficult because the axis of the astigmatism needs to be exact and simply was not with the old technology.
Today, we do all custom LASIK with wavescan. The wavescan gets a custom map of each patients vision. This map is then used to do the vision correction. By using a custom map, every ablation is unique to that patient and that insures the best result possible. In addition, the laser automatically centers and tracks eye movements so that the LASIK correction is always well centered. If a patient looks away, the laser turns off. Astigmatism correction is also more accurate because the laser uses iris registration to place the ablation exactly where it is supposed to be. With all of these advancements, patients are doing better than ever at North Shore Eye Care. That is why we are the Official LASIK Provider of the New York Mets and the Official Eye Care Provider of the New York Islanders. We have a LIFETIME COMMITMENT on our LASIK procedures to give you the confidence in us that you want.
