Spectacular vision outcomes found with iLasik
The surgeons at North Shore Eye Care have been impressed with our visual results following iLasik. Recent analysis from a multicenter, prospective study involving 131 patients have confirmed that excellent visual results can be obtained when performing i-Lasik. I-Lasik basically includes all the innovations included in Lasik, the well known procedure that became popular in the mid 1990's. This principally includes the use of a wavefront-guided laser utilizing customVue wavefront technology combined with the Visx Star S4IR variable spot laser. The wavefront is produced after light is shined in a patient's eye while in a sitting position. The returning light wave is then analyzed by an aberrometer yielding far more detail than simply using your glass prescription to reshape your eye.
Other important components of i-Lasik include iris registration. Measurements are taken while your in a sitting position. When you lie down for laser reshaping of your cornea (the main lens of your eye) your eye can tort or twist. Iris registration is important in order for the laser to be properly aligned, thus compensating for any torsion. Another important feature of i-Lasik is the use of femptosecond laser technology that has been in use for close to one decade. This involves the use of an extremely fast laser that is able to make a precise flap in your cornea in a matter of seconds. While flaps are not essential when reshaping your cornea with a laser they allow for very rapid healing and quick visual rehabilitation by allowing the epithelial cells overlying the cornea to remain undisturbed.
In the above mentioned study as many as 30 patients from 7 centers who were scheduled to undergo surgery were analyzed. The study involved subjects that had mild to moderately high degrees of myopia (nearsighted). Many of these people had significant astigmatism. At just one month 54.5% of these eyes that had undergone i-Lasik had better than 20/20 (20/16) vision with 93.6% having 20/20 vision or better. All eyes had at least 20/30 vision. At 3 months the results were even better with 67.9% of eyes reaching 20/16, 96.7% reaching 20/20 or better, and all eyes achieving at least 20/25 vision.
When filling out a patient satisfaction questionnaire a majority of patients reported that they were very satisfied with vision both during the day and at night. Vision in low contrast situations such as in fog was also stated to be improved. They stated that they were able to resume normal activities the next day and most importantly 100% stated that they were satisfied with their overall vision.
In another related study Dr. Steven Schallhorn working for the U.S. Armed forces noted that people undergoing i-Lasik had improve reaction times, something quite useful to Jet fighter pilots.
These studies confirm the results noted by the Doctors at North Shore Eye Care.
