What is a Cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye.  This happens to all of us with age, but can also happen congenitally or from medications, certain systemic disease, and overexposure to sunlight.  Typically as cataracts worsen the vision becomes blurred, the headlights at night while driving become difficult and patients have glare with sunlight.  As this occurs, your eye doctor will have to frequently change your eyeglass prescription and satisfaction with vision begins to fade.  When the vision gets to the point that it is decreasing quality of life, we suggest cataract surgery.  At North Shore Eye Care, the patient decides when they are ready for cataract surgery.  In most cases, patients are able to tell when vision is no longer adequate.

Cataract Surgery

When the decision is made to proceed with cataract surgery, our North Shore Eye Care eye surgeons are leaders in the field.  We perform cataract surgery through microscopic incisions without the need for stitches, needles around the eyes, or even an eye patch.  The cataract is present behind the iris in its own capsule.  The cataract procedure involves making an opening in the skin of the capsule and then breaking up the lens and removing it.  A new implant lens is then used to restore vision.  There are several types of implant lenses and some deliver only distance vision.  There are also implants that provide far and near and others that correct astigmatism.  We involve patients in these decisions to make certain that patients are able to achieve the goals that they want.
