Exciting, new lasik center now open
Suffolk's largest lasik center is now open offering the finest of personalized care for all our patients. In celebration of the opening North Shore Eye Care is offering a $100,000 giveaway in which all participating patients can benefit from. As a result of the opening we have seen a great demand for lasik consults as many people are still uncertain whether or not they are good candidates for this life changing procedure.
Lasik, which stands for laser assisted in situ keratomileusis is a bladeless way of reshaping a cornea underneath a thin corneal flap. The cornea is the clear window in front of the pupil of your eye and serves as the main lens system of your eye. The eye also has a second lens inside the eye behind the pupil. This lens known as the crystalline lens of the eye enables you to change your focus from distance to near. Lasik has been performed for close to 20 years and has a long, proven track record for both safety and the excellent vision that it affords. Lasik is only one way that laser vision correction is used to reshape your cornea as laser correction can also be performed on the corneal surface as well. Lasik is the more popular way of reshaping the cornea because of the quick visual rehabilitation that it affords. When a flap is made the cornea is pretty much left undisturbed as only the edge of the corneal flap has to heal which it does overnight. Consequently people are able to go about their normal activities the very next day. Initially many people are wary of having a flap made on the surface of their cornea and admittedly having a blade running across your cornea could be a cause for concern. However, at North Shore Eye Care we offer bladeless surgery utilizing an extremely safe an accurate, the laser, the Intra-lase, to create your flap. It is also very fast and painless taking only approximately 15 seconds to complete the flap.
Some of the more common questions that people have regarding qualifications for having this procedure are age requirements and what corrections are able to be fixed. In regard to age the important concept to keep in mind is that the eye must have a stable correction before considering surgery. For this reasons the surgeons at North Shore Eye Care will never consider operating on anyone below the age of 18. By this time many will have a stable correction, but sometimes, especially if people are going on with their education it is prudent to wait somewhat longer. Remember, if you have lasik and your eyes do change later on an enhancement can almost always be done and one of the nice things about having lasik at North Shore Eye Care is that we offer a lifetime commitment to our patients meaning that there is absolutely no charge for enhancements. On the other side of the spectrum there is almost no upper limit on the age in which lasik can be performed, although usually by the time people reach their mid to late 60's we start thinking of alternative procedures. This is primarily for two reasons; the first because by this age most people have enough cataract formation that this might be the procedure of choice, and the other being that older patients often have significant dry eye and lid problems that can be exacerbated by performing lasik.
In regards to the scope of errors that can be fixed, lasik is capable of correcting most forms of myopia(near-sighted), hyperopia(far-sighted), and astigmatism.
We look forward to seeing you at our next lasik symposium or perhaps come for a free lasik consult and see our new state of the art lasik center.
