At North Shore Eye Care in Smithtown and Riverhead, Long Island, we have board certified cataract experts that are leaders in the field of cataract surgery.  We use the latest technology and make sure that each of our Long Island, New York patients has the best possible outcome.  This starts in your initial eye care evaluation.  When you arrive at our Smithtown or Riverhead eye care facility, you will be greeted warmly by our staff and you will be able to see why North Shore Eye Care is different right away.  Our offices are amazing and comfortable, brand new and renovated.    Our staff is happy to help you and answer any questions you have while you are worked up and prepared to see one of our eye doctors.  The technology in our offices is state of the art and this helps us to make sure that cataract is your problem and not glaucoma, macular degeneration or other eye problems.  Once it is determined that you have a cataract that is affecting your vision to the point that you desire cataract surgery, one of our friendly surgical coordinators discusses the policies and procedure with you.

Cataract Surgery

On the day of cataract surgery, we meet at the eye surgical center.  You are able to stay in your comfortable clothes and receive IV sedation for relaxation.  You lie comfortably on the bed of the OR table and simply see a bright light.  The cataract procedure is not scary or painful and is over in a few minutes.  You are able to return to the comfort of your own home that very day.   A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye.  This causes night glare, sunlight glare, and generalized blurred vision.  We are now able to remove the cataract through a microscopic incision.  We use computer controlled ultrasound called phacoemulsification to break up and remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a plastic implant lens that corrects your vision.  There are no stitches, eye patch or needles around the eyes.  There are several types of implant lenses available.  The standard lens helps a patient see in the distance, but a patient would still need glasses for near vision and for astigmatism if present.  There are also astigmatic correcting lenses called Toric lenses that correct astigmatism and Multifocal and Accommodating lenses that help a patient see near and far without glasses or contact lenses.  These choices are discussed with your eye doctor and together, you decide what is best for you.  Because we have a LASIK suite right in our Smithtown office, we are able to adjust any result in cataract surgery to eliminate any possible refractive error.
