North Shore Eye Care, a center of excellence in cataract surgery

Having a cataract removed from the eye is a complex procedure requiring the use of good equipment in tshe hands of an experienced surgeon.  Because this procedure is like no other procedure performed in an operating room we perform almost all of our procedures in a dedicated eye surgery center.  This insures patients that they will be getting not only experienced surgeons but also a well trained  nursing staff and personnel who are comfortable dealing with not only your eyes but your patient needs as a whole.  We recognize that having an eye operation can make even the bravest of people somewhat queazy.  In an effort to allay any apprehension as well as to make you as comfortable as possible we have an excellent anesthesia staff who will insure your comfort.  All anesthesia is administered by a board certified anesthesiologist.  Usually only drops are required to eliminate any sensation about the eye avoiding unwanted injections.

While performing excellent surgery is of paramount importance so that your recovery will be as quick as possible planning for this procedure is of equal importance.  A thorough eye exam is imperative to be sure that no other problems exist that could impair your progress.  For example there are many ocular conditions that occur especially in the elderly that could have an adverse effect on your visual outcome.  One of the more common conditions that can affect the elderly are dry eyes.  Since a normal tear layer is essential for good vision this problem should be diagnosed and treated prior to surgery.  Other common medical conditions that should be pretreated prior to surgery are glaucoma, diabetes, and hypertension.

Once we know that your ready for surgery it is important to decide on what type of intraocular lens implant you want to have to replace your cataractous, natural lens.  These modern lenses are made of a soft acrylic material that are able to be folded upon insertion into your eye thus enabling them to pass through the same small microscopic incision that was used to emulsify your cataract.  There are many different styles of lenses to choose from.  For those patients that have worn glasses for most if not all of their lives and wish to continue in this endeavor there are excellent aspheric lenses which can offer you not only unexcelled, crisp vision but you will be surprised by the vividness of colors.  For those wishing greater independence from glasses there is a large variety of lenses to pick from whether they be accommodative, multifocal, or toric.  The latter lens is used to treat significant astigmatism that can degrade vision.

For more information about our center and to learn more about cataracts Dr. John Mauro, one of our experience cataract surgeons will be hosting a free seminar a week from Tuesday.  The refreshments will be superb and you will find Dr. Mauro to be an excellent and informative speaker.
