Cataract Surgery Experts...Smithtown and Riverhead, Long Island
In Smithtown and Riverhead in Long Island, North Shore Eye Care is the leader in cataract care and cataract surgery. Our board certified eye surgeons are committed to your best vision. Dr. Sid Martin, Dr. Larry Zweibel, Dr. Jeff Martin, Dr. John Mauro, Dr. Paul Choinski, and Dr. Grace O'Malley are all well respected in their field of eye care and share the same devotion to cataract surgery. In our Long Island New York eye care practice, cataract surgery is done in an outpatient eye surgery center. Our patients remain in their own clothes and are able to return to the comfort of their home the very same day. We use IV sedation administered by a board certified anesthesiologist and are able to relax on a comfortable operating room table. Our patients see a bright light and feel little to no discomfort. The entire cataract procedure takes a few minutes and there are no stitches, no eye patch and no needles around the eyes. Eye drops are used to numb the ocular surface so that there is no pain.
What Happens in Cataract Surgery?
In cataract surgery in our Long Island practice, the cloudy natural lens of the eye is removed. A cataract is like the lens of a camera that becomes cloudy or opaque. The symptoms of cataract are glare with oncoming headlights while driving at night, glare with sunlight and blurred vision. When these symptoms become sigificant enough to negatively impact quality of life, cataract surgery is suggested. Our board certified cataract experts are careful to let the patient decide when this point occurs. When the patient decides about cataract surgery, we find that the comfort level with the eye procedure is much improved. After the cloudy lens is removed, a small plastic implant lens is placed where the old lens was and vision is restored. There are many choices when is comes to intraocular implant lenses and we discuss your options with you. If you desire to be glasses independent or less dependent, some of the premium lenses or lifestyle implants may be the right fit. These lenses, accommodating and multifocal implants like the Restor, Crystalens, Tecnis Multifocal and the astigmatic correcting implant, the Acrysof Toric, are designed to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses at all distances. Our patients that choose the premium implants are responsible for the cost of these implants in many cases, but North Shore Eye Care tries to lessen the possible burden with zero percent financing for two years.
