Increasing demand for cataract surgery at North Shore Eye Care

September 24, 2011 @ 08:36 AM — by Lawrence Zweibel

At North Shore Eye Care we have noticed a steadily increasing demand for cataract surgery.  This is probably multi-factorial as our patient base has increased significantly this past year.  Other important reasons for  the increased demand are the expanding senior citizen population as the baby boomer generation is now entering the Medicare age group.    This is a more active and visually demanding group than previous seniors who are quicker to have surgery in order to complement their more active life styles. An interesting statistic given by the U.S. Census Bureau is that the number of United States citizens in 1968 was 38.7 million.  This number is expected to reach 88.5 million in the year 2050.  Presently there are 75 cataract procedures performed for every thousand seniors.  In 15 years this number is expected to rise to 90 for every thousand.  This isn’t just because today’s seniors are healthier and more active but also because the surgery has gotten so much better.

Today’s patients are able to have their surgery on an outpatient basis and are able to go about their normal activities the very next day.  All surgery is performed through micro-incisions without the need for sutures.  Even the lens implant which replaces your cataract is able to enter the eye through an incision that is only just over 2 mm.  For those who wish to see well without glasses there are many lenses to choose from.  Multi-focal lenses (Restor, Tecnis multifocal)  give excellent distance and near vision with most patients never needing glasses following surgery.  Accommodative lenses are also available.  These are lenses that have a single focus but are able to move within the eye enabling your focus to change from distance to near.  Presently there is only one approved accommodative lens on the market.  This is known as the Crystalens manufactured by Bausch and Lomb.  Of interest North Shore Eye Care is named a Crystalens Center of Excellence.

For those with significant astigmatism Alcon Surgical manufactures an excellent lenses that can correct this problem.  These lenses go a long way towards offering you freedom from glasses that you may have needed most of your life.

For all those of you suffering from cataracts and are in need of better vision we recommend you visit our new state of the art office.  Drs. Mauro, Martin, and Zweibel are all Board Certified surgeons.  We welcome you to come in for an office consultation or even better come to one of our monthly seminars.
