Large demand for hearing service at North Shore Eye Care

The LASIK surgeons at North Shore Eye Care, while specializing in eye surgery have noticed a large demand for hearing services.  These services have been offered at North Shore Eye Care for the past 6 months. This is not at all surprising to Dr. Robyn Shapiro, our experienced Ph.D audiologist.  This is because the same group of aging patients that suffer from such eye diseases as glaucoma, cataracts, and macula degeneration also develop hearing problems. There are actually many reasons why patients develop problems with their hearing. One cause may be due to an infection, usually of the middle ear, which require treatment with antibiotics.  Another common cause for hearing loss which can happen at any age is due to the build up of wax in the outer ear canal.  When this happens it's best to let a skilled professional treat you as the use of something like a Q-tip can cause serious damage. As people age many of us develop a neurosensory hearing loss.  This is due to loss of fine hair cells in the inner ear known as the cochlea.  Depending on which hair cells are lost determines what frequencies you will have trouble hearing.  Initially this may present as an annoying ringing of the ears known as tinnitus.  This may be responsive to an over the counter medication known as lipoflavenoid which increases the circulation in the inner ear.  When hearing loss becomes troubling modern hearing aids can bring welcoming relief.  These technological wonders are not only cosmetically pleasing since they are nearly invisible but now work much better than their older predecessors Should you have a hearing problem we recommend you come for a no cost consultation with Dr. Shapiro and see our state of the art facility.
