We tell you about our experience of 50 years in eye care on Long Island and let you know about our cataract techniques that allow you to wear your own clothes and return home the very same day. Our patients receive IV sedation to relax for cataract surgery and due to advancements in technique, there are no needle injections around the eye, no stitches used at any time and no need to wear a patch following surgery. Our patients are able to use their drops right away so that they begin to heal right after surgery.
Choice of Intraocular Implant
In cataract surgery, we remove the cloudy lens of the eye or cataract. We do that through a microscopic incision using phacoemulsification or high speed computer controlled ultrasound. This makes cataract surgery as gentle safe and effective as possible. After the lens of the eye is removed, our cataract experts put in a new intraocular lens. There are several types of implants and the one that you decide to get will allow you to see with varied ability. The general standard intraocular lenses allow a patient without astigmatism to see well in the distance. For near tasks such as reading your watch, cellphone or a book, you will need glasses. These are the patients that generally carry cheater reading glasses at all times. There is an implant that corrects astigmatism, called an Acrysof Toric implant. This implant corrects astigmatism (a football shaped cornea) and allows patients with astigmatism to see well without glasses. There are times that we need to adjust the result with laser vision correction or LASIK for the best vision, which we do at no charge. The third type of lens is a multifocal implant like the Tecnis Multifocal or Restor. These lenses allow for near and far vision without glasses in most cases. Our patients enjoy the largest range of vision with these implants, but they must be willing to tolerate some night vision phenomenon. There can be some rings around lights at night. The last implant that we commonly use is the Crystalens. This lens works be moving forward and back by the natural focusing mechanism of the eye. This lens gives excellent distance and intermediate vision, but patients have to use mild reading glasses for fine print at times. To see what lens is best for you, our cataract experts are happy to discuss your options and help you to decide what would be your best match.
