North Shore Eye Care in Smithtown and Riverhead welcomes Dr. Sonya Dhar, glaucoma specialist, to it's team of board certified eye doctors.  Our eye surgeons are leaders in the fields of LASIK and cataract surgery and are happy to add a fine ophthalmologist like Dr. Dhar.  Dr Sonya Dhar completed a glaucoma fellowship with Dr. Alan Crandall in Salt Lake City Utah.  After her fellowship, she has spent time in Nepal and is now excited to bring her skill and knowledge to North Shore Eye Care in Long Island.

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma describes a host of diseases of the eye that involve damage to the optic nerve of the eye from intraocular pressure that is too high for that particular optic nerve.  In the simplist terms, the drainage canal of the eye becomes clogged internally and the eye continues to produce fluid internally.   Because of decreased drainage ability, the intraocular pressure in the eye starts to rise. A high intraocular pressure damages the optic nerve progressively over time which causes patients to lose peripheral vision slowly.  Glaucoma is often painless so patients are not aware that they have it and it can be discovered very late in the process in some cases.  Of course, this is an overly simplistic explanation of a complex and poorly understood disease process, but serves as a basic form of understanding.  Certain medications can cause glaucoma and some forms of glaucoma never involve an elevated intraocular pressure.  There are also closed angle forms of glaucoma that are caused by mechanical closure of the trabecular meshwork or drainage canal of the eye.  Because glaucoma is often asymptomatic, it is easy to understand why regular eye exams is so important.

North Shore Eye Care was established by Dr. Sidney Martin in 1960 along with his wife.  The original practice was run out of the rental apartment that Dr. and Mrs. Martin started living in Smithtown.  Over the years, the practice has grown dramatically and now Dr. Larry Zweibel, Dr. Jeffrey Martin, Dr. John Mauro, Dr. Robyn Shapiro and now Dr. Dhar practice along side Dr. Sid Martin, who continues to see patients at 82 years of age.  North Shore Eye Care is currently merging with Hampton Eye in Riverhead and Dr. Paul Choinski and Dr. Grace O'Malley are now joining with the eye doctors of North Shore Eye Care to form quite an amazing group of eye care providers.  We pride ourselves in our reputation in cataract surgery and LASIK and are opening the newest and most advanced LASIK Center on Long Island in Smithtown in the next month or two.
